A Glimpse of My Future

With many more miles ahead of me than I have behind in my journey as a writer, I have a clear view of the horizon. It’s me with my fingers on a keyboard, supporting my family with my writing.

It’s actually a more specific vision than that. I picture myself on the road with my family. We’re in a camper and we’re driving down the east coast hitting all the different shore points between Philly and Key West. Every day or so, we pull over, unload the kids, and I watch them pour out onto the beach with my wife. And I hang back.

With me I have my laptop, my journal, some scratch paper, a jug of water, and the same Spotify playlist of classical music that I’ve been listening to for years. And I’m typing. And typing. Off in the distance, the kids are jumping over the waves, or digging to China. In this particular vision, I can see them from where I sit. That’s not an essential part of it, really. I get distracted easily and I love digging a good hole so it might not be very practical.

At some point an alarm goes off. Two hours have passed (or 3 or 1). With that, I finish the passage I was writing, I close my laptop and toss everything into the camper and join my family on the sand.

The vision is simple, and it’s my mark of success. I’d love to be a NYT Bestseller one day. I’d love for one of my stories to be made into a movie starring a young Shia LaBeouf and Saoirse Ronan. But what I want more than anything is for my work to pay for my family to be a family.

That horizon is still a way’s in the distance, but I got a taste of it this week. I’m down the shore with my wife and in-laws. And while they are out in the sun, I’m writing. And now that I’m done, I think I’ll go join them.
